Wood Flooring Adhesive

Wood flooring adhesives are an essential component of your wood flooring solution. That’s not to say all wood floors require adhesive to install. Many newer floors come fitted with click systems that allow the boards to click together and be floated over the subfloor, no glue required! This is an easier solution for the average DIYer, but that’s not to say using wood flooring adhesive is obsolete. In fact, it is still a very effective way to install a real wood floor.

So what is wood flooring adhesive? It is a very strong glue specifically designed for wood to be flexible so that it can endure the stresses a wood floor will take as people tread on it, as well as the natural movement of the wood as it endures environmental fluctuations in humidity and temperature, which will cause the wood to expand and contract.

Adhesive is commonly used for parquet floors, usually herringbone and chevron floors, since the installation of these types of wood floors is very delicate and they need to be laid very precisely, it is important that they don’t move around a lot.

Engineered or solid wood floors with the traditional tongue-and-groove installation mechanism will require a special wood-to-wood adhesive to glue the joins together as the boards are being fitted in place. From here, the floor can also be glued to the subfloor, or simply floated over it, the latter option would require underlay.

When using adhesive, the most common practice is to glue the boards straight to the subfloor, which removes the need for underlay and reduces the chance the boards will move around and cause squeaking when walked over. Several methods include putting the adhesive straight on the subfloor, putting it in small beads on the bottom of the boards, or using a trowel to spread the adhesive evenly for more effective holding. This all helps to create a more secure floor.

At Timba Floor, we sell two types of adhesive, a resin based wood-to-wood adhesive for gluing tongue-and-groove boards together, and the Timba Pro Bond + Advanced Hybrid Technology flooring adhesive for trowel application.
