Popular Wood Flooring Trends for 2022

Flooring is a crucial element of interior design, and has been for hundreds of years. The home is a natural expression of our tastes and creativity. A place to showcase on social media, and to make an impression to any guests, be they friends or family. Home décor is a very popular trend in and of itself for a reason.

And of all the flooring options, real hardwood flooring has a unique charm that can never be matched by a man-made product such as vinyl or laminate, no matter how convincing the replicas.

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered wood flooring has slowly been taking over in popularity over solid hardwood flooring due to the many advantages it offers to the latter. Firstly, engineered wood flooring looks identical to solid wood flooring once it is installed due to the veneer of hardwood on the boards. So from an aesthetic point of view, it is the same. Engineered wood flooring is more versatile than solid wood. This is because the boards are made with layers of plywood glued together at different angles, preventing the natural movement of the wood significantly (not completely), allowing it to be placed into different types of rooms such as conservatories. But this is also a benefit for every room, because the floor is less likely to warp and buckle due to installation errors or environmental/humidity fluctuations.

Because of this, engineered wood floors can be installed over underfloor heating. Solid wood floors can not, because they naturally expand too much.

With engineered wood flooring, you have a wider variety of options to choose from in regards to the width of the planks, that is wider or narrower planks. It is hard to get a lot of solid wood boards from a single tree, especially if you want them to be wide, because the trees are only so big and have limited wood.

The only downside to engineered wood flooring compared to solid wood flooring is longevity. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished many times due to the thickness of the hardwood. Engineered wood can only be sanded and refinished a limited amount of times due to the thin veneer. However, a properly maintained engineered wood floor will easily last you over 25 years.

Parquet Wood Flooring

Timeless, decorative floors have been in fashion for hundreds of years, and have roots in royalty. There are many types of parquet flooring. The most popular today are herringbone and chevron. Other examples of a popular parquet floor would be the basket weave pattern, or the diamond patterns. These luxury flooring options are excellent for larger rooms, giving the illusion of a larger space as well as creating an exquisite pattern on your floor. Parquet floors are bound to turn heads in any interior.

Herringbone flooring is distinct for its staggered patterns running between the planks, whereas chevron flooring creates a more uniform V shape running up and down the length of the room. Parquet floors are also great in hallways.

Rustic Design: Distressed Wood Flooring

Distressed wood flooring is engineered wood flooring that is designed for an aged appearance. Promising a look of age, rustic character, and heritage, this is a perfect floor for an antique-style room that has stood the test of time. It’s important to note that distressed wood flooring is not actually old or aged, it is just constructed to look that way. It brings all of the benefits of a brand new, functional floor with the character of an old floor. The distressed look works well in rustic, traditional, or contemporary interiors. A diverse, versatile floor which is popular for its distinct characteristics.
