How to install a door threshold

Introduction:

A door threshold—also known as a door trim, door profile, or a door bar—covers the gaps between rooms when new flooring is installed, providing a smooth transition between the rooms. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or a novice looking to enhance your home's overall look, this guide will show you how to install door thresholds.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Door profile

  • Measuring tape

  • Circular saw

  • Hacksaw

  • Nails or finish screws

  • Hammer or nail gun

  • Sandpaper

  • Wood glue (optional)

  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step 1: Measure and cut the door threshold:

Start by measuring the width of your door frame. Ensure you measure both sides of the door frame. To achieve a clean and professional look, it's essential to cut the door threshold precisely to fit your door frame's dimensions. Cut at the right angles with the hacksaw.

Step 2: Test the fit:

Before attaching the door profile, it's a good practice to test the fit by placing the pieces around the door frame without fastening them. This step ensures that the profiles align correctly and do not require any further adjustments.

Step 3: Apply adhesive (optional):

For added stability and durability, you can apply wood glue to the back of the door threshold. This step is optional but recommended for a stronger bond. Apply a thin, even layer of glue to the backside of the door threshold and press it against the door frame. Some door bars come with self-adhesive, meaning you only need to peel a strip off the back of the threshold and press it onto the subfloor.

Step 4: Nail or screw in place:

Secure the door threshold in place using nails or finish screws. Ensure the holes are above the flooring. If the flooring between the rooms is two different materials, such as carpet and laminate, a Z bar will be required and the carpet will have to be tucked underneath before it is nailed.

Step 5: Final inspection:

Once the adhesive, if used, has dried, and any finishing touches are complete, inspect the door threshold for any gaps, uneven edges, or loose pieces. Make any necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure a flawless appearance.
